The study also ascertains the average scale and item discriminating power of the scale among ObafemiAwolowo University, Ile-Ife undergraduates and established the reliability of the affect scale in recent time among the University undergraduates. These were with the view of providing information on the psychometric properties and usability of the scale among university undergraduates. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The study population consisted of all the 29,514 male and female undergraduates of ObafemiAwolowo University, Ile-Ife for the 2018/2019 academic session. The sample comprised 1280 undergraduates that were selected using multistage sampling procedure. From the 13 faculties in the University, eight faculties were selected using simple random sampling technique and from each of the selected faculty a total of 160 undergraduates were selected using convenient sampling technique to make a total of 1280 undergraduates. An instrument titled “Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS-SF)” was adopted for collecting relevant data for the study. The scale is a self-report questionnaire that consists of two independent factors: positive and negative affect. Data collected were analysed using Model Fit Statistics {Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), Tucker-Lewis Fit Index (TLI) and Comparative Fit Index (CFI}, Item Response Parameter Model and Cronbach's Alpha Test. The results showed that the factor structure of the affect scale among ObafemiAwolowo University undergraduates was not consistent (RMSEA = 0.086, TLI = 0.697 CFI =0.746). The results also showed that while the positive affect fit the model and consistently measure the theoretical sub-construct (RMSEA = 0.039, TLI = 0.947 CFI =0.983) among the undergraduates, the negative affect did not fit the model and does not consistently measure the construct (RMSEA = 0.066, TLI = 0.808 CFI =0.424) among the undergraduates. The results further showed that on the average, positive and negative sub-factors of the scale moderately discriminates (x=0.997 and x= 0.823) respectively. In addition, the results showed that 90% of the items have high discrimination index. Finally, the results showed that the affect scale is reliable (r = 0.80). The study concluded that the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS-SF) possessed good psychometric properties and usable among ObafemiAwolowo University undergraduates. It is also interesting to examine correlations between the PANAS scales and measures of related constructs, such as anxiety, depression, and general psychological distress. PANAS scales in conjunction with a number of other commonly used measures and report. This will help to gather information regarding the development of brief scales to measure the two primary dimensions of mood— Positive and Negative Affect. The paper examined assessment of lecturers' perception of using artificial intelligence for testing in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State. The descriptive survey research design was adopted. Two research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. Population of the study comprised 400 academic staff (lecturers). Sample size was 300 selected using the stratified random sampling technique. Instrument for data collection was a questionnaire titled: “Lecturers' Perception of Artificial Intelligence for Testing Questionnaire” (LPAITQ). The reliability coefficient of the instrument was determined using test-retest and yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.72 (r = 0.72). The research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation, while the hypothesis was tested using the independent t-test. The result of the study revealed that lecturers' perception of using artificial intelligence for testing was positive, there was no significant difference in the lecturers' perception of using artificial intelligence based on gender. The study recommended that lecturers in the university system should update their knowledge through conferences, seminars and workshops on artificial intelligence use in testing.</p> 2024-12-17T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://journal.theasseren.org.ng/index.php/joe/article/view/360 INFLUENCE OF PRIMACY, MIDDLE AND RECENCY BIASES ON THE PSYCHOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL MULTIPLE-CHOICE MATHEMATICS ITEMS 2024-12-12T12:39:59+00:00 Olajide Augustus AYANLADE ayanladeolajide2016@yahoo.com Taiwo Oluwafemi AJEIGBE taiaje@oauife.edu.ng <p>The study determined the difficulty and discrimination of National Examination Councils (NECO) Multiple-choice Mathematics items from 2014 to 2016. The study also investigated influence of primacy, middle and recency biases on the psychometric characteristics (difficulty and discrimination) of NECO Multiple-choice Mathematics items from 2014 to 2016. These were with a view to providing statistical evidence on how the three biases consistently affect item difficulty and discrimination of NECO Multiple-choice Mathematics items across different population sets within the period of three consecutive years. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design. The population for the study comprised 53,986 Senior Secondary School Students (SS III) who registered and sat for the National Examinations Council Mathematics paper III from 2014 to 2016 in Osun state. A sample of 2,311 candidates was selected using multi-stage sampling procedure. Two Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected from each of the three senatorial districts of the State, using simple random sampling techniques. From each of the selected LGAs, two schools were selected using simple random sampling technique. An intact class of senior secondary students (SS III) was used from each of the 12 selected schools. The instrument used for the study are the NECO Mathematics questions for the three years. Students’ corresponding responses as contained in the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) were scored dichotomously using Keys collected from NECO and calibrated under R software to generate difficulty and discrimination indices. The results of the study indicated that the item difficulty and discrimination parameters of Multiple-choice Mathematics items across the three years. For year 2014: 52(86.7) and 43(71.7) fell under moderate difficulty and discrimination respectively; for year 2015, 57(95.0) and 34(56.7) fell under moderate difficulty and discrimination respectively; lastly for year 2016, 42(70.0) and 12(20.7) fell under moderate difficulty and discrimination respectively. Finally, the result also showed that the primacy, middle and recency biases has no significant influence on difficulty and discrimination levels of National Examination Council (NECO) Mathematics paper III in the year2014 (For the difficulty; F(2,57) .=0. 412; p&gt;0.05 and For the discrimination; F(2,57) .= 0.739; p&gt;0.05) and 2016(For the difficulty; F(2,57) .= 0.023; p&gt;0.05 and For the discrimination; F(2,57) .= 0.275; p&gt;0.05). And the result further showed that the primacy, middle and recency biases also has no significant influence on difficulty level whilst there is a significant influence in terms of discrimination of NECO Multiple-choice Mathematics items in 2015(For the difficulty; F(2,57) .= 0.539; p&gt;0.05 and For the discrimination; F(2,57) .= 6.409; p&lt;0.05). It is concluded that difficulty and discrimination indices of the National Examination Council Multiple-choice Mathematics items are stable and not affected by primacy, middle and recency biases across the three years that were reviewed.</p> 2024-12-17T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://journal.theasseren.org.ng/index.php/joe/article/view/361 ADDRESSING SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ILORIN METROPOLIS SENIOR SECONDARYSCHOOLS: ANTIDOTE TO QUALITATIVE SECONDARYEDUCATION 2024-12-17T14:15:10+00:00 Idayat N. The study identifies and addresses socio-economic factors influencing Senior Secondary School students' academic performance in Ilorin metropolis. A mixed-method and a meta-analysis technique approach was adopted for the study to extract the findings of earlier research on the influence of the identified factors (Parental level of education; income and school environment). A purposive sampling technique was used to select twenty professional counsellors as a focus group for the interview. Qualitative data generated for research question 2 were analysed thematically. The study revealed that low parental education and income are the major socio[1]economic factors that influence students' academic performance negatively in Ilorin metropolis. Also, classroom and school environment were not conducive for learning. It was concluded that the availability of recommended textbooks in the school library, organizing adult literacy classes and clearing the market scene within the school environment can promote students' academic performance. The study recommended that professional counselling services within the school should be made functional by helping students to focus more on their academic performance, particularly students whose parents have a low educational background.</p> 2024-12-17T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://journal.theasseren.org.ng/index.php/joe/article/view/362 FACTORS IMPACTING EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN MAKURDI EDUCATIONAL AREA OF BENUE STATE 2024-12-17T14:27:44+00:00 Olubunmi Helen OLATUNDE olubunmihelen195@gmail.com Cletus I. The study examined how upper-basic students can be enhanced in higher-order thinking skills and retention rates with the use of think-pair-share instructional method in learning mathematical concepts. It employed a 2x2x2x2 non-equivalent intact classes research design, involving a population of 33,320 students from Basic 7, 8, and 9, and targeted 16,365 students in Basic 9. Respondents were selected through multistage sampling (simple and purposive random sampling techniques). The control and experimental groups were taught using different modules, and performance was evaluated using pre-test (PREMPT) and post-test (POSTMPT) instruments, with reliability coefficients of 0.75 and 0.81 respectively. Four research objectives were raised, transformed into hypotheses and tested using ANCOVA. The showed that the teaching strategy applied enhanced higher-order thinking skills and retention rates. The finding also showed that no gender difference was observed in the two groups. The study concluded that this approach can improve critical thinking and retention skills in mathematics if properly handled. It was recommended among others that students should be encouraged in the use of collaborative the chique in solving mathematics problems.</p> 2024-12-17T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://journal.theasseren.org.ng/index.php/joe/article/view/364 PREDICTING ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING SCORES FROM KNOWLEDGE OF ENTRY SCORES IN MATHEMATICS: THE CASE OF MERCY COLLEGE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (MCMLS) MAKURDI BENUE STATE 2024-12-17T14:50:49+00:00 Christiana I. AGI ladyagi2@gmail.com <p>The study predicted Medical Laboratory Science students assessment of learning scores from the knowledge of their entry scores in Mathematics. The purpose of the study was to determine students' of Mercy College of Medical Laboratory Science (MCMLS) entry assessment and assessment of learning (summative assessment) mean scores at the end of the first session for two sets which stands as their final Mathematics results in the college. Two research questions guided the study and one null hypothesis was formulated and tested. The study adopted ex-post facto research design. The population of the study was 350 students. A sample of 78 students was drawn for the research using simple random sampling technique. The Researcher adopted Mathematics achievement scores for both entrance and their summative scores. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions while t- test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that various students' scores exhibited a higher predictability factor. Likewise, unit gains on entry assessments demonstrated a statistically significant indicator for academic achievement on high summative assessments. It was therefore concluded that the entry scores have positively predicted students' performance on their summative assessment scores in Mathematics in the college. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that entry assessment was imperative so as to reveal, if after exposure to the contents there will be improvements in achievements for proper placement and remediation programmes of the students before they proceed to the next stage.</p> 2024-12-17T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024
